1 〔液体が動く〕 flow; run; (したたって) drip; (ちょろちょろと) trickle; (はける) drain; (循環する) circulate.

●側溝を水が流れている. Water is flowing in the (roadside) gutter.

・ろうが溶けて流れた. The wax melted and dripped.

・首筋を汗が流れた. Sweat trickled down the back of his neck.

・アマゾン川は南米大陸を流れている. The Amazon flows across the South American continent.

・日本の東側沿岸を黒潮が流れている. The Kuroshio Current flows along the eastern coast of Japan.

・床には大量の血が流れていた. There was a large amount of blood (lying) on the floor.

・トイレの水が流れない. The toilet won't flush.

・血液は全身を流れている. Blood circulates throughout the (entire) body.

2 〔液体とともに動く〕 float; be carried; be borne; 〔流失する〕 be washed [carried, swept, borne] away; drift away.

●流れに乗って花びらが流れていく. Flower petals are floating [being carried] down the stream.

・桃太郎は流れてきた桃から生まれました. Momotarō was born of a peach that came floating down the stream.

・ボートが下流へ流れてしまった. The boat was washed downstream.

・大水で多摩川の橋が流れた. The flood washed [carried] away a bridge over the Tama River.

3 〔漂う〕 drift; stray; 〔滑らかに動く〕 glide.

●流れるような所作 (a) graceful movement

・流れるような弁舌 eloquent [fluent] speech; a smooth tongue.

●おいしそうなにおいが流れてきた. A delicious smell came drifting through the air.

・雲が東へ流れていく. Clouds are drifting to(ward) the east.

・煙が廊下を流れている. Smoke is drifting [wafting] down the corridor.

・天頂を星が流れた. A shooting star glided across the sky overhead.

4 〔順調に進む〕 move [progress] smoothly; 〔ある方向に進む〕 move in the direction of [toward]….

●東名高速は順調に流れている. Traffic on the Tōmei Expressway is moving (along) smoothly.

・作業は滞りなく流れている. Work is moving along smoothly.

・友人からファックスが流れてきた. A fax arrived from a friend.

・その顧客名簿はカード業者から流れてきたものらしい. I heard that the customer list was obtained from a credit card company.

・買い物客は大手のデパートからディスカウント店に流れている. Customers are leaving major department stores for discount stores.

5 〔流布する〕 circulate; go around; 〔満ちる〕 come into force [effect]; become current; prevail.

●…といううわさが流れた. A rumor spread to the effect that….

●そういう憶測も流れている. There has been speculation to that effect.

・こんな情報が流れてきた. This information has come into our hands.

・その瞬間, 緊迫した空気が流れた. At that instant, the atmosphere grew tense.

6 〔(いつのまにか)好ましくない方向に向かう〕 lapse into 《luxury》; run to 《extravagance》.

●怠惰[放逸]に流れる have a tendency toward idleness [indulgence].

●この種の規則の適用はとかく安易に流れがちだ. These kinds of rules have a tendency to be loosely followed.

・結婚式が華美に流れる傾向がある. Weddings tend to become [turn into] extravagant affairs.

7 〔音声が〕 be heard; be played; 〔電流が〕 flow.

●喫茶店にはクラシックが流れていた. Classical music was being played in the coffee shop.

・ラジオからアナウンサーの声が流れてきた. The announcer's voice came over the radio.

8 〔経過する〕 pass; elapse; 〔伝わる〕 be transmitted; be descended.

●時が流れた. Time passed. | Time slipped [went] by.

・あれから 10 年の月日が流れた. Ten years have passed since then.

9 〔とりやめになる〕 be canceled; be called off; 〔不成立になる〕 fall through; fail; end in failure; 〔質草が没収される〕 be forfeited.

●会議の予定が流れた. The meeting was called off.
